Spaceport America
From the ground, Sierra County looks like any other quiet desert community and its rich living water system of lakes, marshes, and rivers is sometimes hidden from unsuspecting interstate travelers. For tourist astronauts returning to Spaceport America from an altitude of 350,000 feet, the aquatic jewels of Sierra County will leap into view as swaths of brilliant silver, blue and green on the smooth marble of Earth below.
The hangar at the operating hub for public space travel was dedicated on October 17, 2011; home base for pay-per-view suborbital treks out of Earth's atmosphere. The Spaceport America Terminal Hangar Facility is to be utilized by Virgin Galactic
The hangar-dedication ceremony is the latest in a string of opening events for the spaceport. In October 2010, officials dedicated the facility's long runway, named "The Governor Bill Richardson Spaceway."
